Nowadays, hiring a digital marketer is the wisest investment you can do for your business.
The meteoric rise of digital marketing took over the business landscape. The game changed fast and it pushed companies to remodel their structures and strategies. To keep up with the evolving marketing scene, more companies are leaning on digital marketers.
A great digital marketer can help even a small business to compete and attract customers. He has the power to increase the rate of customer retention and satisfaction. He can also increase cross-sell and upsell rates. Most importantly, he can build and earn people’s trust.
For seven years, that’s what Rey Baguio has been doing. He’s been helping businesses of all shapes and sizes to stay relevant in this digital age. He’s a seasoned digital marketer who’s always eager to share his knowledge and experiences to others. He even created Freelancers Hub Philippines, a group where freelancers can come together and help each other out. He also founded Zarangola Media, an agency which provides cost-efficient digital marketing services.
Check out our interview with the digital marketing advocate, Rey Baguio.
Q: Can you tell us more about what you do as a freelancer?
I do freelance digital marketing consultancy focusing on local small to medium business owners. I’m always interested in making digital marketing practical and cost-efficient for the market.
Q: What made you decide to go into freelancing, and was it something you wanted to do?
I never thought of being a freelancer years ago. But what got me here is the realization that I want to run my own business and find ways to be able to make an impact to others.
Q: What do you love most about freelancing?
The opportunities are endless when you go freelancing. That is if you really are into it. I mean, really see yourself not just as an individual contractor, or worse, a work-at-home employee. If you consider yourself as your own business, you can make your business grow and see opportunities to make things happen.
Q: What is the biggest challenge you faced as a freelancer? How did you overcome it?
The start is always the hardest. Building your portfolio as a freelancer is not a walk in the park. It takes a clear understanding of yourself, careful planning and timely execution.
Q: What inspired you to build Zarangola Media?
Zarangola Media came about because of the need for both local freelancers and business owners to see ‘eye to eye’. Businesses from other countries are all praises when it comes to the talent and skills of our local freelancers. But because most local businesses are still not clear on how to deal with giving work to local freelancers, both parties are having bad experiences with each other. So there’s a need to bridge that gap and make the brilliance of our local freelancers boost the growth of local businesses.
Q: What do you think is your best trait that contributed largely to your success?
I don’t feel good about calling myself a success yet. But I believe that the right perspective, resiliency and a clear understanding of your ‘why’ is crucial if one wants to be successful, whether this may be in freelancing or in the office setting.
Q: What do you think is the biggest challenge in the freelancing industry in the Philippines? How do you think we can resolve this challenge?
The ‘Freelancer Mentality’. Freelancers must understand that when they jump into freelancing, they’re actually going to run their own business.
Q: What book greatly influenced your freelancing career?
As much as I encourage everyone to read helpful books, there’s no book I read that helped me start my freelancing journey. Instead of books, I talked to people. I attended webinars and seminars, and read stuff online. I also watched tutorials on YouTube.
Q: What do you think makes Filipinos great as freelancers?
We Filipinos are smart. The same reason why we are successful in the BPO industry is similarly the reason why we are great freelancers. I just hope the local government will support the industry like it did the BPO industry.
Q: What piece of advice can you give to aspiring freelancers, especially to those who are struggling to get a gig?
Before you get into freelancing know what yourself and what you can do. See if what you can do is something someone would pay you for. If you want to attract clients, focus on understanding their needs before you even offer your services. Understand what your client would consider of value and customize your proposal around that.
