From “Wantrepreneur” to “Entrepreneur”

Over the past few months, and ~25 workshops, we had the chance to meet many managers, entrepreneurs and, also, to be fair, a few “wantrepreneur”.

“Wantrepreneurs” could be defined as those who really would like to be entrepreneurs. They have ideas and might start “one day” but probably not “that” day.

Also, looking at the feedbacks we get after any given workshops, as well as on our website, we see that there is still a real need for practical answers and information. So, we believe that since many have been asking how we did this or that, assuming we are a 1,25-people team, we figured we could give a hand to a few more who have a very small (start-up) project.

Indeed, how has the word “Entrepreneur” evolved this last few year? “I am an Entrepreneur” used to mean “I am between jobs at the moment” when recently it likely made you think about Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, or Jack Ma … and those are not looking for jobs anymore.

But for many of us, “real people”, it is not necessarily about building a company that would become the next Apple tomorrow. It is firstly about getting control of our own life, building something to be proud of, maybe build some kind of a legacy, solving a problem of our everyday life and… we will then see what’s next.

At NextStep we are doers. We act fast and we believe in mottos like “better done than perfect” and a few others, you’ll see. But we do work smart too. Focusing on our added value, making sure we are using our time on putting the next brick to our project. Trying to make money first.

Bootstrapping became an obsession.

Ok, you have an idea. Now what?

If you are familiar with the Tech Start-ups world, they usually talk about MVP “Minimum Viable Product”. In fact, this concept could also be applicable to any project. Most of the time, you don’t need a tech-heavy solution with an IOS or Android application, and a 5-people team with designers and sales to launch a project, in order to finally understand if there is a market or not.

It is OK to start as a hobby, identifying a market, and figuring out how to be profitable right away even though it means that it’s only by a few bucks. Too often lately, entrepreneurship means raising funds (and to be honest it also means becoming the puppet of someone else. So much for “getting control of your life”…).

Before moving towards something different requiring more involvements and probably more cash, you gotta start somewhere and it can be as little as you want it to be.

  • Selling a few of your fashion creations online?
  • Friends are dying for your lasagna and always saying “you should sell those” or this beer you are brewing during the weekend?
  • Found a great product while traveling and think that it could be great here?
  • Cannot find a cosmetic product that could work well with your allergies and decided to make it yourself?
  • Tired of these products that, you think, are only solving half of your problem?

But here are some reasons why you didn’t get on it yet:

  • lack of experience
  • limited resources
  • full-time occupation

Those are some of your excuses.

Wouldn’t you like to see “what if…”?

Well, then let’s work on it together. Let’s prioritize what needs to be done first, in order to get the ball rolling and see if you are onto something.
